Museums in 's-Hertogenbosch

If you come to 's-Hertogenbosch as a tourist for a day, you can hardly leave without visiting one of our museums. But also as a resident or future resident of 's-Hertogenbosch, you should definitely have seen a number of museums; 's-Hertogenbosch is not called the culture city of the south for nothing.

Our city has a nice museum for everyone. In this article I will tell you a bit about the different museums in 's-Hertogenbosch and what you can see there.

The North Brabant Museum

Het Noordbrabants, as we call the museum, is surely the best known and most visited museum of 's-Hertogenbosch. Located in the Museum Quarter on the Verwerstraat, the museum is housed in the Bossche Gouvernementspaleis.

The permanent exhibition 'The Story of Brabant' shows you the most important moments of Brabant's history; the Romans, prehistoric farmers, Brabant dukes, the iconoclasm and the arrival of Napoleon up to industrialisation. For children, a fun treasure hunt has been set out through this collection.

There is also a permanent exhibition about Vincent van Gogh. His love for Brabant becomes clear in this exhibition, which features no less than 12 works by the painter, as well as letters, photos and personal documents.

In addition to these two permanent exhibitions, Jan Sluijters has many works on display in the museum. This born and bred citizen of Bosnia can be found in the Palace rooms on the ground floor.

In addition to the permanent exhibitions, there are a variety of changing exhibitions on a regular basis.

When you walk from collection to collection in the museum, you walk around the Palace garden. In the garden, you can enjoy a cup of coffee in the sunshine at the Museum Brasserie. The eye-catcher in the garden is the monumental red beech. The new museum building that connects with the Gouvernementspaleis was deliberately built around this tree.

The Design Museum

The museum focuses on showing the social significance of design. In 2019, there was quite a stir in 's-Hertogenbosch and the rest of the world over the exhibition 'Design of the Third Reich'. There are regularly changing exhibitions. The permanent collection consists of post-war ceramics and modern jewellery. You can find the museum in the Museum Quarter.

The National Carnival Museum

If you ask a local in 's-Hertogenbosch for directions to the National Carnival Museum, they won't understand what you're getting at. National Carnival Museum? Never heard of it. Just ask for the Oeteldonks Gemintemuzejum and they will immediately tell you the way or walk with you to drop you off.

's-Hertogenbosch is Oeteldonk and Oeteldonk is a way of life. In the museum, one of the hosts will tell you everything about carnival, especially about carnival in 's-Hertogenbosch. Why is 's-Hertogenbosch called Oeteldonk during carnival, why do the Oeteldonkers wear a smock and a red-white-yellow tie and not, like above the rivers, a pirate outfit or a suit from Squit-Game or Casa de Papel? Besides the answers to these questions, you get to see historical images, various costumes and of course lots of music.

The Gemintemuzejum is located at a beautiful spot in 's-Hertogenbosch; the former gatehouse of the Orthenklooster and at the Binnendieze. After your visit to the muzejum, you can stroll around and enjoy the city.

Museum Butcher

In the Choorstraat, in the shadow of the Sint Jan, you will find the Slager museum. The Slager family includes 8 painters in 3 generations. In the museum, you can see cityscapes of 's-Hertogenbosch, landscapes from Brabant and portraits. The collection offers a picture of the cultural and social life in 's-Hertogenbosch from the second half of the 19th century to the end of the 20th century. The museum is not large and the works hang in cosy rooms. It is an ideal museum to visit if you do not want to spend half a day inside. This is easy to fit in between shopping and enjoying a terrace in 's-Hertogenbosch.

Jheronimus Bosch Art Centre

Our most famous painter is Jheronimus Bosch or Jeroen Bosch. But we in 's-Hertogenbosch do not have a single original painting hanging in one of our museums. But still, the Jheronimus Bosch Art Center is certainly worth a visit. If only because you can look at the paintings (reproductions) from very close by. The Art Center also organises guided tours, the guides tell you more about the life of Hieronymus Bosch and draw your attention to the imagery in his paintings. Have you been inspired? You can follow various courses in the Art Center and I would not skip the museum shop either.

The House of Bosch

The House of Bosch has just been opened. On the market square in the house where he learned to paint, you can go in search of who Jheronimus Bosch was. You will experience the Middle Ages in 's-Hertogenbosch and go on an exciting journey where history comes to life. After your visit, don't forget to walk to the statue of Hieronymus Bosch on the market square.

Sint Jans Museum - the construction shed

Next to the Sint Jan, you will find the Sint Jansmuseum de Bouwloods. This is definitely a must after your visit to the Sint Jan. It does not matter where your interests lie; architecture, symbolism or religion. You will find it all in this museum. The Sint Jan has been restored several times. In the museum, you will find various images of these restorations, of the interior and exterior. A number of these pieces have been in the Rijksmuseum, but fortunately they are back where they belong in 's-Hertogenbosch. Especially the gargoyles that served as water drains are great to look at.

The Swan Brothers House

The Zwanenbroedershuis has two functions; it is the house where the members of the brotherhood meet and it is a museum. The Swan Friars' House can only be visited during the regular guided tours. So you can't just knock on the door and ask if you can come in. However, it is certainly worth the effort, because there is quite a bit of mystery surrounding the society whose house it is. The Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Lady sounds a bit dark, and%26nbsp;you will have to find out for yourself during a guided tour. You will also get answers to the question of who the members of this mysterious society are, what they have meant and still mean to the city of 's-Hertogenbosch. You will also get an answer to the question why the brotherhood has a swan in its logo and why this is also reflected on the facade of the building.

You read it, there is enough choice in 's-Hertogenbosch in terms of museums. So if you want to move to Den Bosch, call in an estate agent. buying agent of vb%26amp;t Makelaars Den Bosch in.
