Number of homes with energy label A doubled in 5 years

Of all Dutch homes, almost 1.8 million have energy label A or higher. That is almost a doubling in five years. The municipality of Almere is the leader in the Netherlands, and in North Brabant it is the municipality of Helmond.

Five years ago, only 10.9% of homes in the Netherlands had energy label A or higher. Now it is 21.5% of the total housing stock. This was revealed today in research by Independer based on the RVO's energy label registration.

Top 10 municipalities in North Brabant

The percentage of energy-efficient homes still varies greatly by municipality, though. In total, almost 255,000 homes within the province have energy label A, which works out at about 35.4%. This is higher than the national average (34.5%). Leading the way is Helmond, where 43.5% of homes have the most sustainable energy label. Oosterhout also scores well in terms of sustainability. The top 10 municipalities with the most houses carrying an A label:

  1. Helmond: 43.5% of homes have energy label A

  2. Oosterhout: 41.3% of homes have energy label A

  3. Bernheze: 40.8% of homes have energy label A

  4. Boekel: 40.7% of the dwellings have energy label A

  5. Tilburg: 39.6% of the dwellings have energy label A

  6. Son en Breugel: 38.9% of the dwellings have energy label A

  7. Valkenswaard: 37.8% of the dwellings have energy label A

  8. Someren: 35.7% of the houses have energy label A

  9. Halderberge: 35.6% of the houses have energy label A

  10. Waalwijk: 34.8% of the dwellings have energy label A

In Cranendonck, the share of houses with energy label A is the lowest, at only 22.4%. Roosendaal (24.9%) and Bergeijk (26.6%) also have relatively few energy-efficient homes.

Energy guzzlers in North Brabant

In the Netherlands, 7.9% of all houses have energy label F or G, while in North Brabant the figure is 6%. These labels often occur in older homes with poor insulation and single glazing. In Baarle-Nassau, as many as 12.3% of homes have energy label F or G, followed by Bergeijk and Alphen-Chaam with 10.4% each. In Veldhoven, this type of house is the least common, with only 3%.

Low incomes, high energy bills

Pim Holstvoogd, energy & sustainability expert at Independer, said:
"In municipalities with the lowest average income, the share of houses with energy label F or lower is the highest. And that makes it even more galling: it is precisely those households that already have less to spend that often live in poorly insulated houses and therefore pay for higher energy costs. The better the label, the lower the charges."

Tampering with energy labels

How reliable energy label figures are, however, remains a question. The FD previously showed in research that property developers and housing associations issue incorrect energy labels for their own homes. In the past four years, this would involve nearly 20,000 energy labels.
